Who is Australia's Neil Diamond?
November 4th 2006 08:11
We were driving home the other night – on one of our many long trips from town –(actually it’s only a 60km round trip so it’s not that far). Still we happened to be listening to Neil Diamond “Sweet Caroline-ing” and telling us about life in The Bronx. It made me comment that Neil Diamond was often the city ballad singer for U.S.A. in the same way that John Denver was the country ballad singer. Diamond has lots of songs that speak of city life, like “Brooklyn Roads” and “Beautiful Noise”. Certainly there are songs about drinking in bars and alone and being by oneself – like Mr Bojangles, Solitary Man, Shilo, Red,red Wine etc, but I tend to picture many of those in a lonely city room – but maybe that just might be me.
Anyway:
Then we decide that John Williamson was Australia’s Country ballad singer and could be matched up with John Denver. But who is Australia’s Neil Diamond? Who writes and sings the stories of the Australian city? Perhaps you have some names of individuals or groups that fill this void in our musical world. I’m sure there is someone – but would love to know your thoughts.
